Brothers Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale opened their Grand East Side Bazaar at 938 Third Avenue, New York, originally selling ladies hoop skirts, influenced by European trends of the time. Unlike most of its competitors who specialized in one particular thing, the Bloomingdale brothers expanded their wares into both menswear and womenswear, importing garments from far and wide.
The Bloomingdale’s flagship store moved to its 59th Street and 3rd Avenue location in New York City in 1886, expanding slowly but surely into an entire city block by 1929. Redesigned at this time by architects Starrett and Van Vleck, the beautiful Art Deco-design building is the iconic Bloomingdale's store that still stands today.
Through its support for local communities, to coining the term 'window shoppers', thanks to its one-of-a-kind window displays, Bloomingdale’s’ pioneering spirit has always set them apart from the rest. In 1973, they launched their ahead-of-its-time, sustainable ‘Big Brown Bag’, now synonymous with the store. It was also around this time that Bloomingdale's helped turn American designers Perry Ellis, Norma Kamali and Ralph Lauren into household names.
